Mel Gibson Says He Has Not Touched Alcohol Since Arrest
Wednesday, October 11, 2006
Mel Gibson has said he has stayed sober and has not touched alcohol since his arrest for drunk-driving 65 days ago. Gibson was heard uttering anti-Semitic statements during his arrest.
Appearing for the first time since his arrest on "Good Morning America," the actor said that that his remarks had been "the stupid ramblings of a drunkard," and adds, "the last thing I want to be is that kind of monster."
He told the show's host Diane Sawyer that he had to "allay the fears of others and to heal" those who had been hurt.
After the arrest, he was fined $1,300 and his licenses suspended for three months.
The 50-year-old, who has previously been treated for alcoholism, said he began drinking two months before his July 28th arrest.
Gibson told Sawyer, "Years go by, and you're fine," he adds that a relapse could happen "in a heartbeat, in an instant, on an impulse."
"All you can do is take another step, keep breathing," he said.
He acknowledged that some people in Hollywood may not want to work with him because of his anti-Semitic remarks, but that won't stop him from making films.
"I feel sad because they've obviously been hurt and frightened and offended enough to feel that they have to do that. And it's their choice. There's nothing I can do about that."
His latest movie, the historical action adventure "Apocalypto," is due for release in December.
